Organisational Context

An OHS Management System can only be truly effective if it has been designed to suit the context it operates within. This includes internal factors such as organisational structure, culture and governance requirements, as well as external factors such as community expectations, legal obligations and emerging technologies. The system design should also be tailored to address the needs and expectations of relevant interested parties, beyond just workers, such as shareholders, regulators, unions and the local community. Once these factors are identified, the OHS Management System should be designed to accommodate them.

Have you considered what factors, both internal (e.g. culture, strategic objectives) and external (legal, social, ethical), that could impact your health and safety management system?*

Leadership and Planning

Leadership and Planning

Effective health and safety management doesn’t happen without senior management actively leading and supporting good health and safety outcomes. This means senior management document commitments relating to health and safety management, understand the type of health and safety issues that need managing and supports efforts to improve OHS performance through the setting of strategic health and safety objectives and plans.

Documented Information

An OHS Management System can only function effectively over the long term if there is a structured way for system documentation to be controlled (i.e. created, reviewed, updated and accessed) when required.

Human Resources

Organisations need to engage with their people to bring an OHS Management System to life.  Organisations should regularly communicate relevant OHS information to relevant parties, including communicating OHS management responsibilities to workers and senior leaders.  There should be suitable time and equipment as well as people and financial resources to ensure that the OHS Management System works as intended. Workers should also be regularly involved in health and safety decision making and should be trained and competent to perform their tasks safely.

Operations

Operations

Poorly planned and managed work activities are what ultimately leads to worker injury and illness. There should be processes to identify hazards associated with work tasks, assess the risk and put in place suitable controls and work methods to keep people safe, including when emergencies occur. There should be means to monitor legal requirements so that work activities conform with them as well as processes to consider health and safety when procuring goods and services.

Performance Evaluation

Performance Evaluation

Effective OHS Management Systems include a range of checks and balances to help understand if the system is working as intended. There should be proactive efforts to monitor and inspect conditions in the workplace to ensure the work environment, equipment and work activities are safe and meet minimum standards. When things go wrong (such as incidents) there should be efforts to try and understand why so that the same issue doesn’t occur again.  There should also be a structured internal audit program that comprehensively assesses whether the OHS Management System is being followed and legal requirements met. Senior leaders should also review the performance of the OHS Management System on a regular basis to understand if it remains an effective way to prevent workplace injury and illness.

Has your organisation comprehensively identified what aspects of the OHS Management System needs to be monitored and measured, the method of monitoring, what results of the monitoring will be compared to and when the monitoring and measurement will be performed?*

Your management system does not meet requirements relating to Organisational Context

Your organisation does not have a health and safety management system in place, or if it is, it has not been designed with suitable consideration of its internal or external context or the needs and expectations of parties that are relevant to the management system.

Your management system only partially meets requirements relating to Organisational Context

Your organisation may have a health and safety management system in place, however its design has not fully considered the needs and expectations of interested parties and/or the internal and external context that your organisation operates within.

Your management system meets all or the majority of requirements relating to Organisational Context

Your organisation has a health and safety management system that has considered, or mostly considered, the needs and expectations of interested parties and the internal and external context your organisation operates within.

Your management system does not meet requirements relating to Human Resources

Your organisation has not identified all the ways it needs to involve and support its workers to achieve good health and safety outcomes on a regular basis. While it may have some limited means to engage / involve / support relevant workers these efforts are inconsistent and do not occur systematically across each of the required areas.

Your management system only partially meets requirements relating to Human Resources

Your organisation has identified resources and implemented various ways to involve and support workers to achieve good health and safety outcomes including consultation, training and communication. The majority of these processes are performed regularly, however further efforts are required to ensure they align with specific ISO45001 requirements.

Your management system meets all or the majority of requirements relating to Human Resources

Your organisation has provided thorough resources and has comprehensively implemented ways to involve and support workers to systematically achieve good health and safety outcomes across all required areas. Workers are regularly asked to participate in health and safety decision making and have strong awareness of their roles and responsibilities.

The results of this ISO 45001 self-assessment are based solely on the information provided by the participant, which is assumed to be accurate and complete. Verus does not independently verify the answers submitted and cannot guarantee the accuracy or reliability of the results. Participants should not rely on these results as a definitive measure of their readiness for ISO 45001 certification. It is important to note that only a comprehensive audit, including an independent assessment of documented evidence, can provide an accurate and complete evaluation of an organization's readiness for ISO 45001 certification. Verus is not liable for any decisions or actions taken based on the self-assessment results. For a full and valid certification assessment, a formal audit is required.

Your management system does not meet requirements relating to Leadership and Planning

The organisation does not comprehensively document its commitment to an effective health and safety management or systematically plan to improve health and safety performance. Leaders generally demonstrate low or little interest in health and safety or their role in health and safety management.

Your management system only partially meets requirements relating to Leadership and Planning

While some health and safety commitments may be documented in an OHS Policy, organisational leaders only have a limited understanding of health and safety risks and/or are not consistently involved in leading efforts to improve performance. If health and safety objectives are set they are not always accompanied by detailed plans to achieve them and monitor progress.

Your management system meets all or the majority of requirements relating to Leadership and Planning

Your organisation has an OHS Policy and there are regular and consistent efforts by senior leadership to participate in and support efforts to understand workplace risks, promote continuous improvement and overall safety culture. There are formal health and safety objectives set with plans and progress reports regularly prepared.

Your management system does not meet requirements relating to Operations

Your organisation has not effectively assessed and planned how operational activities will be performed safely. There are limited means to understand health and safety legal requirements, operational hazards and risks and/or respond in the event of an emergency.

Your management system only partially meets requirements relating to Operations

Your organisation has made some efforts to assess and plan to perform operational activities safely, however the efforts are not consistent or comprehensive. While there may have been efforts to identify some health and safety legal requirements as well as workplace risks and emergencies – including those involving contractors – these are not comprehensive and methods to prevent injury and illness do not show consistent application of the hierarchy of controls.

Your management system meets all or the majority of requirements relating to Operations

Operational workplace risks, including emergencies and changes, are generally understood and planned for and there are effective and reliable ways to minimise injury and illness. Your organisation monitors legal requirements on a regular basis so that they can meet them. Goods and services are only procured when health and safety standards are not compromised.

Outline/Introduction of Self-Assessment:

ISO45001 is the internationally recognised standard for health and safety management systems, providing organisations with a proven framework to continuously improve their health and safety performance.

Certification to ISO45001 provides third party assurance that your organisation has a health and safety management system that aligns and is implemented to international best practice. Even if you aren’t seeking certification, ISO45001 provides a robust framework for health and safety management.

If you are considering certification to ISO45001, Verus’ Self-assessment Tool can help highlight the strengths and weakness of your current health and safety management system against the requirements of ISO45001 – helping you map a path to certification or a more effective management system.

The Self-Assessment contains a range of multiple choice questions designed to test your current practices across a range of health and safety management system standards. The Self-assessment should take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. At the end of the Self-Assessment you will be provided with an overall readiness score based on your answers and have the option to receive a detailed report that outlines the specific strengths and opportunities to improve your management system.
